Trailer Tuesday: THE TRACEY FRAGMENTS

Now that Oscar nominee Ellen Page got everyone’s attention with Juno, she has two new films coming out (Smart People and The Tracey Fragments). Just in time to make you feel like Ellen Page is everywhere.

The Tracey Fragments, directed by Bruce McDonald (Queer as Folk and other various Canadian TV shows) is about a 15-year-old girl’s search for her missing brother — missing, probably because she hypnotized him into thinking he was a dog. All we know is she ends up on a bus, naked with just a shower curtain to cover her. And that’s not even the most interesting thing about this movie — the entire film is shown through various Mondrian (multi-frame) split screens, each with a different camera angle or scene.

I have to wonder if this split screen gimmick (ahem… or artistic expression I should call it) will get tiring or frustrating after awhile. But there are there big reasons to see this movie: 1) Ellen Page is giving quite an awesome performance as demonstrated in the trailer. 2) Broken Social Scene created an original score for the movie! 3) All the original footage was released for the public to re-edit it as they like. Now that’s serious support for artistic expression. Some “refragmented” versions can be found on The Tracey Fragments website.

The Tracey Fragments is in theaters on May 9, 2008 but if you are lucky enough to be in the Boston area on April 25th or 27th you can catch a screening at the Independent Film Festival Boston.
