Trailer Tuesday: PINEAPPLE EXPRESS
I still can’t get enough of the 2001 Judd Apatow series Undeclared. And all Apatow’s movies (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad) have been a nice slap in the face for cinematic comedy. But, I gotta say… the whole “clueless, slacker guy with his slacker friends who have no idea how to interact with women” shtick is getting kind of tiresome. So let’s mix it up a bit: Pot smokers on the run from corrupt cops!
I had my doubts with this trailer, but it appears Apatow’s crew can even tackle “clueless, slacker guy meets action film storyline, thus hilarity ensues”. The film stars Seth Rogen of Knocked Up and Superbad fame and James Franco (Harry Osborn in the Spider-Man movies) as a pot smoker and dealer (respectively) on the run after witnessing a cop kill a guy. The pot jokes will surely persist throughout the movie (close to annoying for some), but the funniest stuff will be watching Rogen and Franco emulate action stars to get out of their predicament.
WRITERS: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg (Superbad co-writer) Judd Apatow
DIRECTOR: David Gordon Green, with tons of indie cred to his name. See this Green IFC interview to learn how he ended up with Rogen and Apatow.
ALSO STARS: Gary Cole (The Brady Bunch Movie, Office Space), Rosie Perez (White Men Can’t Jump), Bill Hader (Superbad, Saturday Night Live), Craig Robinson (Darryl from The Office).
RELEASE DATE: August 8, 2008

[…] It seems Pineapple Express — named after a particular strain of cool cannabis — is just what a stoner comedy should be. Funny. Seth Rogen and James Franco stay baked while on the run after one of ‘em witnesses a murder. There’s a good deal of action in the film, and that’s being criticized by some who feel it’s too much or gets in the way. Dude, just light up and chill.
