STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS For Dummies

Last summer, we offered a primer on Transformers and received positive response from Lobby readers. So here’s the same for the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars, yet another chapter in the timeless George Lucas saga. If you’re a casual Star Wars fan — and yes, there are plenty — you’re probably wondering what this is, where it’s from, and where it fits. Have no fear.

Sci Fi Wire hooked up with Clone Wars producer Catherine Winder, so we’re passing along information directly from Camp Lucas…

TIMELINE: The Clone Wars takes place between Episode II: Attack of the Clones (2002) and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005). According to Winder, Lucas was always anxious to tell this story, but didn’t have time to dedicate until recently. Check the trailer…

PLOTLINE: The Jedi Knights are struggling to restore peace and maintain order (Okay, isn’t that the crux of all six live-action films?!) Anakin Skywalker and a disciple embark on a vital mission, one that leads them to the gruesome crime boss Jabba the Hutt. Working against Anakin and his charge are Count Dooku and assorted henchmen, working to guarantee Skywalker’s failure. Meanwhile, the enormous Clone Army– led by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda – battle the Dark Side forces.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Movie PosterHARDLINE: To my mind, Lucas’ story and execution in Episode II lost its way. I’m not sure he has enough in his dwindling bag of tricks to further enhance Star Wars mythology with additional characters and further-fleshed tales. Although, watching the trailer, you can feel that samurai-style influence that affected Lucas from the onset of his creation (see Akira Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress, among others). At the very least, the animation looks enticing, and perhaps visually closer to the “younger” tone of Episodes I (The Phantom Menace) and II.

DIRECTOR: Former storyboard artist Dave Filoni, who’s directed seven episodes of the 2005 animated series Avatar, and is supervising the TV content of The Clone Wars.

WRITERS: A trio of guys — Henry Gilroy, Steven Melching, Scott Murphy – with plenty of animated television world experience. Think recent editions of Bionicle, The Batman, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

STARS: Returning from the live-action films to provide voices: Christopher Lee (Dooku), Samuel L. Jackson (Mace Windu), Anthony Daniels (C-3PO). TV actor Matt Lanter voices Anakin.

The trailer looks pretty good for the most part, I wonder if the detla squad are included in the movie, as the trailer showed some scenes of lone clone troopers with special markings on them.
