Review Roundup: HELLBOY II, JOURNEY in 3D, MEET DAVE
This weekend, we’re smack in between July 4th (Will Smith World) and the release of blockbuster-in-waiting The Dark Knight. Call it a relative “lull.” So for the first time in many weeks, we have three sizable premieres: A sci-fi comic-book sequel, a rousing 3D remake and another head-scratching selection from Eddie Murphy.

Writer-director Guillermo del Toro is the film industry’s favorite flavor right now, so his action-packed fun-loving sequel is being warmly received. Look for an underworld’s worth of cool monsters (hey, the guy directed Pan’s Labyrinth) and that outcast style of humor that helps define the big red guy. And it’s pretty cool that the Hellboy mini-franchise stars two fairly freaky actors, Ron Perlman and Selma Blair.

Aren’t you wondering how many action-adventures Fraser has starred in? It just feels like a lot. This one is all about two letters: 3D. If you can take Journey with a grain of salt, a tongue in cheek and any other colloquialism you care to reference, the critical masses think you’ll have a good ol’ adventurous time. Just look out for those cheap 3D thrills…

Eddie Murphy is a recent Oscar nominee. I just want to reiterate that while you consider Murphy’s latest, a discombobulated comedy / sci-fi / message movie / kids flick directed by Brian Robbins (Norbit). Murphy plays a tiny alien, as well as the giant, humanesque vehicle carrying all the little aliens while on Earth. Some find it too soft and bizarre; others find it sweet and well-meaning. And others will be renting The Adventures of Pluto Nash.
