Now Filming: THE STEPFATHER Remake
As years go by, Hollywood continues to insist on more and more remakes, especially thrillers (When A Stranger Calls, The Amityville Horror, Halloween). So it’s no wonder The Stepfather, a little gem of a thriller from the 1980s, would be next, with production on the remake having begun last week. The original, starring Terry O’Quinn (Lost, Alias), was loosely based on John List, a man who murdered his family and went missing for 16 years.
The story for The Stepfather was simple, yet psychologically complex: A loving, seemingly normal man is dangerously obsessed with the concept of family: when his own fails to meet his impossibly perfect standards, he kills them and moves on to the next.

So we Lobby writers ask you: Do dysfunctional families still work in Hollywood cinema? I think so, although the level of empathy can sometimes get irritating — and confusing. How many people think their grandmother is an eccentric drunk… versus how many people think their stepfather from hell is actually a homicidal maniac who uses dull, rusty knives to kill people?
THE CAST: Dylan Walsh (left, Nip/Tuck), Sela Ward (The Day After Tomorrow, The Guardian), Christopher Meloni (both Harold & Kumar movies, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit)
THE DIRECTOR: Veteran television director Nelson McCormick (Nip/Tuck, Prison Break) who’s now become a film director — of horror remakes. He helmed the remake for Prom Night (see the trailer) before recreating The Stepfather. In his TV life, McCormick has chosen good dramatic material, having directed episodes of E.R., Third Watch, House, Alias, Cold Case, CSI: NY and NYPD Blue.
THE SCREENWRITER: J.S. Cardone, McCormick’s writer on Prom Night and a regular scribe of direct-to-video stuff like Sniper 3 (we didn’t know there was a Sniper 2).
Will The Stepfather remake match up to the underrated 1987 thriller? Or will it be another flop like so many other remakes?
