New Take on FOOTLOOSE Movie Soundtrack
If you’re of a certain age (late 30s, early 40s) it’s burned into your memory. The ageless Kevin Bacon frolicking across the farms and the high school halls with the late Chris Penn, teaching him how to dance and let loose… Footloose. And Deniece Williams’ ”Let’s Hear It For the Boy” is cranking in the background. Footloose is all about the soundtrack — Kenny Loggins, Bonnie Tyler, Ann Wilson and Mike Reno – and now a complete cover version is available from recording artist Doveman (Thomas Bartlett). With a background story as good as the soundtrack itself.
It goes like this: Bartlett was approached by his friend Gabriel Greenberg, who asked his buddy to cover the entire Footloose album, a favorite of his half-sister, who passed on as a teenager. His notes say a lot about the soundtrack, the movie, the era:
… A couple of summers ago I found a tape of hers with a startling cover photograph - this was Footloose. I couldn’t stop listening: it was a portrait of 80’s love, desire, pain, freedom, and frenzy; of being a teenager in a time of change. By listening, I could step into Jenny’s shoes, see things from her vantage point. I could be emancipated by rock and roll and walkmen, just as she had been. We could listen together.
Bartlett complied with his friend’s request to cover the entire Footloose album. The result is available for free at his website, dovemanmusic.com. When you think of the circumstances while listening, it’s about as melancholy as a film soundtrack deserves to be. Go get it.

For free?
Shalamar needs those royalties, dude.
Seriously.
I had the original on vinyl and cassette. This remake is a cool idea. I gave it a listen. I know it’s meant to be taken as a whole, but I think I can only handle a bit at a time. Melancholy is right. Any hip-hoppers also up to the task?

Wow, vinyl and cassette. I can see that. One for the house, one for the car. I remember thinking how cool that chill Kenny Loggins song was during the closing credits.
Not sure I want to hear the hip-hop versions though.
And yeah, Shalamar probably needs every penny. I’m guessing Deniece Williams does too?

Embarrassing that I know this…
Deniece sang the “Family Ties” theme (and other duets) with Johnny Mathis, so if she got points on that, she’s set for life.
Apparently, Kevin Bacon covers Footloose as part of his Bacon Brothers touring act and it brings down the house every time (it’s on iTunes, too). Good for him. But that has to hurt a little bit, too. Don’t you think?

I’m not sure theme song performers get points, but nice try. Maybe she’s getting per-play royalties. In that case, yowsa, think of all those reruns.
The Bacon Brothers are on iTunes?! I gotta logoff, see you later.
