“Hearts of Darkness” Finally Coming to DVD

Hearts of Darkness Movie PosterThe most entertaining documentary in history is coming to DVD November 20. Okay, ”most entertaining” is subjective, of course, but ask anyone who’s seen Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse and you might hear more of the same.

Hearts of Darkness chronicles the absolute chaos that went into the creation of Francis Coppola’s Apocalypse Now. Famously known for being an overblown, overbudget, occasionally dangerous production, Apocalypse Now did more than secure a place in modern film history.

It nearly drove Coppola mad. And that’s primarily because he was surrounded by his own madness — enormous setpieces, borrowed military helicopters, an unexpectedly overweight Marlon Brando, a wasted, unprepared Dennis Hopper… and on and on. And it’s all in this documentary, which includes incredible footage from Coppola’s wife Eleanor, shot during the making of Apocalypse.

The title Hearts of Darkness is a reference to Heart of Darkness, the Joseph Conrad novel on which Coppola and John Milius based Apocalypse Now. And just like Willard on his doomed journey to nowhere, Coppola was on one of his own, stuck in a grandiose film production that seemed as if it might never end.

Previously unavailable on DVD, the 1991 film is certainly one of the most beloved recent documentaries, especially by film fans. On the IMDb, Hearts of Darkness has an 8.0 rating with over 3700 votes.
