You can hardly go a few months without coming across the movie genre we like to call “uplifters”. Remember the Titans. Glory Road. Pride. Akeelah and the Bee. Against-all-odd tales  — many dealing with racism — that aim for swelled hearts and weepie tears.

For his directorial debut, Denzel Washington chose one such story, the 1930s-based The Great Debaters. Washington built well on the history of the “uplifter,” with a cast that includes Forest Whitaker and Kimberly Elise, and acclaim from the Chicago Sun-Times, New York Times, and African American Film Critics group. Now you can win a copy of The Great Debaters 2-Disc Collector’s Edition DVD.

    Anything Denzel Washington makes is worth watching. Besides, a old school buddy of mine–Tim Parati–is in the movie, which makes it even more fun.

    Denzel is one of those actors that will be known as greatness of the 90’s and 2000’s. The Great Debaters will be one of those movies that shows his many talents. I really enjoy watching his movies.

    When I was a kid (50 years ago or more) we had serious (?), organized (?) debates at the dinner table over everything from politics to religion to the chances of the Minnesota Twins. I’ve ever since loved debating. I’d love this movie.
