Early “Golden Compass” Reviews: Bad News

The Golden Compass Movie PosterAfter months of trailer exposure and a new “First Look” special on HBO, The Golden Compass is set to open Friday, starring Nicole Kidman. And the early word is not good.

The Golden Compass is yet another attempt to fill that huge gap left by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. All the studios — especially New Line, distributor of both Rings and Compass — search for that magic formula: Literature + fantasy + epic action + sequel opportunity = box office gold.

Golden Compass would be the first entry of the His Dark Materials trilogy… if it makes it through this release.

Some early reviews:

Todd McCarthy at Variety:
Oddly uninviting… lack of exciting uplift

Michelle Orange at The Village Voice:
… the intricate plot becomes an empty challenge … feels not just unfinished but undone

Nick Schager at Slant:
… confusing … meaningless

On the bright side, Kirk Honeycutt at The Hollywood Reporter dug the movie, calling the combination of effects and live-action “superb”.

The title sucks, the story looks like reheated Lord of the Rings, and Nicole Kidman’s middle name is Poison.

I wouldn’t bet on the other two movies in this proposed trilogy just yet.
